Launch of the "Gender Mainstreaming in Trade and Economy Toolkit

Under the patronage of H.E the Minister of Social Affairs and Labor, the United Nations Development Programme in cooperation is hosting a conference to launch the first "Toolkit and Resource Guide" on Trade and Economy – UNDP experience in Syria" which is the final deliverable of the above mentioned project. The event will take place at the Sheraton Hotel at 9:30am.

The project was funded by the Japan Women in Development Fund with the ultimate objective to develop an enabling environment and a mechanism for economic empowerment of women by mainstreaming gender in trade and economy at three levels in the country, macro, meso and micro.

This was achieved by establishing a knowledge base for gender, trade and economy through proper study and analysis that concluded to producing two main knowledge products have used as main references for the achievement of the toolkit.
  • Information Map on institutions related to women's economic activities in Syria,
  • Report on the Economic Status in Syria, with focus on the economic activities of women.

Also, Building the capacity of Syrian practitioners on different issues (related to gender, trade and economy in the country), creating a National Network for ‘Business Support’ targeting women, and linking the National Network with International and Regional Networks with the purpose of learning from best practices and experience sharing.

Thus, this tool kit is intended to be used as a resource for practitioners and policy makers to be used in various contexts such as:
  • To assist in the preparations of training and capacity building initiatives and programs on gender and economy / gender and trade
  • To further understand concepts, mechanisms and tools for mainstreaming gender in economy and in trade agreements
  • To develop analytical and planning skills and tools for mainstreaming gender in economy and in trade agreements
  • To inform policy dialogue and policy formulation in these sectors
