Description / Overview:
This project intends to support the Syrian Government in conducting a socio-economic assessment of displaced Iraqis living in Syria. Over an eight-month period, the project, which will be implemented by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will produce three main outputs, namely: i) defining the number, geographical location, and socioeconomic characteristics of displaced Iraqis in Syria; ii) analyzing the overall development impact of the Iraqi movement on Syria as a receiving country as well as on the displaced Iraqi populations assessing the capacity of the Syrian Government to contend with and address the impact; and iii) proposing operational responses that mitigate the negative and maximize the positive developmental impact of the population movement and presenting them in a donor round-table meeting.

Objectives:
The project intends to support the Syrian Government in conducting a socio-economic assessment of the impact and situation of displaced Iraqis living in Syria, and to use the results to propose operational responses and mobilize resources among donors.

Target Beneficiaries:

  • Ministry of Foreign Affairs
  • State Planning Commission
  • The Iraqi population in Syria
  • The Syrian public
  • Line ministries

Implementation Strategy:

  • Assess the number, geographic location and socioeconomic characteristics of the displaced Iraqis, their coping mechanisms, the impact on the country and the capacity to deal with the influx of Iraqis
  • Make recommendations for addressing the evolving challenges. Ultimately, this assessment should serve as a scientific and credible tool to help the Syrian Government mobilize resources from the donor community to implement these recommendations.

Achievements / Current Status:

  • Five missions have been conducted in order to prepare the final study
  • Preliminary report “Macroeconomic Impact of Displaced Iraqi on the Syrian Economy (Preliminary Findings and Policy Considerations)” has been drafted and shared with MoFA
