Description / Overview:
This project aims to strengthen Syria’s disaster risk management capacity via the development of the national disaster-reduction capacity and the reinforcement of the current institutional and legislative framework, enhancing local level risk management initiatives
Objectives:
- Support institutional and legalization systems in disaster reduction
- Prepare manpower through the provision of training courses in all Syrian governorates
- Improve the level of risk awareness among local communities
- Develop local capacity and improve the abilities of disaster management staff
Target Beneficiaries:
- Central Command for Civil Defence
- Higher National Committee & committees of local governorates·
- Fire and rescue services, civil defence and police departments·
- Seismology Department of the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources
- Ministry of Education and schools
- Red Crescent & NGOs
Implementation Strategy:
- Develop a national risk reduction strategy and strengthen the institutional framework to implement it
- Strengthen and improve the preparedness and response to disasters of concerned local authorities and national agencies
- Raise awareness surrounding earthquakes and their risks, including the development of a sub-programme for earthquake preparedness and awareness in schools
- Increase capacity for conflict resolution through crisis risk assessments
Achievements / Current Status:
- Achievement of Basic studies included in the project work plans(2006-2007) and according to the project three outputs.
- Sub-contract on Institutional and human resource assessment TOR 17. is being in progress and about to be completed.
- Project work teams and representatives of local communities within and around the project sites are exposed to local and regional training programs according to project annual work plans of 2006-2007. Establishment of Disaster Reduction Coordination Center
- Design & implementation of Earthquake Master Plan for Damascus;
- Emergency plans for Damascus and Homs are being designed·
- Several trainings conducted for high-level officials·
- Awareness-raising materials produced and disseminated; including games and materials for children
