Description / Overview:

The project aims at improving the performance of Lattakia port activities, including modernization of equipment and work processes as well as extensive training of port workers on ISPS codes for maritime safety


Objectives:

  • Prepared a technical study for the rehabilitation of the old silos in Lattakia port and the building of a new one, together with documentation for international bidding process.
  • Prepared a capacity development needs assessment study for the ports staff (management and labors) and designed training materials including vocational training, based on the available training opportunities in Lattakia.
  • Prepared a master plan for port expansion, in three phases, which was endorsed by the Syrian government.
  • Carried out a thorough assessment study for the development and modernization of Lattakia port, as pilot port,

  • Carry out a comprehensive assessment study

  • Support in the revision of the current legal framework for relevant issues such as customs and import regulations
  • Assist in training programmes of the personnel of the maritime transport sector
  • Propose a port expansion plan for the future


Achievements / Current Status:

  • Proposed design for building new silos and rehabilitation of old silos, preparation of intel. Tender document. Submitted and endorsed.
  • Proposed design for Port expansion through 3 –phase’s process, the design was approved and endorsed by Minister of Transport and Economic council.
  • Design for establishment of Maritime training centre is in place together with most up-dated maritime curricula including occupational safety health.
  • Background & assessment study on Lattakia port potentials (present and forecasted); and preparation of Intel Bidding tender to Terminal container management contract.
  • Workshop on ISPs code applications 2006
  • Workshop on Facilitating Maritime traffic 2007
  • Legal framework for addressing labour salaries issue
  • Study regarding maritime conventions and Syria level of adoption and enforcement.
