Rural Community Development Project In Jabal Al-Hoss

Description / Overview:

This project encourages local development and it contributes to alleviation of poverty in the area of Jabal Al-Hoss. Particularly, trying to ensure the long-term sustainability of a network of Village Development Funds (VDFs) financing income-generating activities

Objectives:
  • Provide a legal policy framework for the management of microfinance programmes
  • Expand the network of Village Devlopment Funds (VDFs) in the region
  • Create community-based micro-finance institutions to manage VDFs

Target Beneficiaries:
Population of Jabal Al-Hoss rural area

Implementation Strategy:
  • Prepare, review and finalize a legal framework
  • Create an institutional linkages with other microfinance scheme networks in the country
  • Empower Village Committees with the legal authority and technical expertise required for a gradual handover of responsibilities concerning financial and organizational management of their respective funds

Achievements / Current Status:
  • A socio-economic database has been created to serve progress anlysis. Several comparative statistical studies conducted between 2000 and 2005, showed that loan receivers could improve their living standard (housing, nutrition, education, women’s empowerment and general income increase). The percentage of women loans rised to 43%
  • A network of 32 sanduq (VDFs) has been established, 20 of them are already completely sustainable, rest is to follow by end of 2007
  • More than 7500 men and women are fully involved in the village development funds
  • Around 250,000 USD have been mobilized from indigenous sources
  • Around 8700 loans have been granted and a repayment rate of 98% has been achieved
  • A kindergarden has been established to provide pre-elementary education and to enable women to work
  • Currently entering the last phase of the project with the aim of attaining financial, administrative and operational sustainability and autonomy for the time after the project
